Q:

What is the difference between basic cleaning and deep cleaning

Heidi W.  asked on  Oct 28, 2012

A:

The difference in a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning is dependant on the condition that the hygienist or Doctor finds when they do your exam...Depending on your personal hygiene and your consumption habits, you could just need a simple cleaning where the hygienist does a light scale and then polishes your teeth. Normally people who have their teeth cleaned every 6 months just need a regular cleaning. However, if there is a lot of staining or calculus that we can see above the gumline, or below the gumline in x-rays, a deeper cleaning is necessary. At that time the hygienist will use a combination or hand scaling and ultrasonic scaling techniques to remove the tartar and calculus and then polish your teeth. Sometimes, there is a need for anesthetic and deep scaling that is done in a series of appointments, this is extensive and requires active periodontal therapy.
