After navigating floating platform staircases, dodging living-room-level bosses, and searching for randomly appearing bathroom keys, most homeowners come to regret purchasing houses built by video-game designers. Today's Groupon offers respite from the chaos: for $199, you get one night for up to two people at the Architect's Inn Bed and Breakfast on Newport's Historic Hill, up to a $399 value. This Groupon will get you a large room (Redwood, La Farge, and Belmont rooms, or Perry Suite) or a small room (deluxe and standard rooms, Woodbine Cottage, Nellie, and Isaac Suites) during the season (May 1–October 31) or off-season (November 1–April 20) on weekdays or subject to availability on weekends. With rates fluctuating throughout seasons, guests can apply the $399 value of their Groupon toward a large room if it costs more and pay the difference.

Nestled on a quiet residential street in the heart of historic Newport, the Architect's Inn began its life in 1873, as the private residence of prominent local architect George Champlin Mason. Fashioned after the Swiss chalets Mason encountered during his travels, the 23-room space gained early notoriety for its ornate exterior woodwork and in-house yodeling goatherd concerti. Since its moonlit transfiguration to a bed and breakfast in 1996, the elegant Victorian mansion has entertained travelers in its five luxury guest rooms and suites. Period furnishings and antiques fill the lofty sleeping quarters with enough authentic 19th-century ambience to convince guests that prolonged bed rest is an acceptable treatment for maladies of the spleen. Visitors who wish to continue a velvet-trimmed descent into Victoriana can take advantage of the Inn's close proximity to the Newport Society's stately mansions, while would-be seadogs can amble over to the nearby Cliff Walk for a salty view of the mighty Atlantic.

All guest rooms feature a cornucopia of luxury amenities, including afternoon tea and refreshments, private baths, fireplaces, free off-street parking, at least 600-thread-count linens, and more. The deal also includes a full breakfast of mostly organic, seasonal, gourmet fare on the breezy, garden-facing porch in warm weather or by the cozy fire when Old Man Winter books a room. The kitchen will readily cater to guests' special dietary needs, be it gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, or Morlock. All rooms valued over $300 may include a wine tasting and tour, and your choice of a Newport attraction, such as a massage or restaurant voucher. All rooms valued between $250 and $299 may include Fort Adams tickets and a wine tasting and tour. Deluxe or standard rooms include breakfast but no extras. All extras (except breakfast) are subject to availability.

Reservations are required. Weekend rooms are subject to availability from May 1 to October 31. This Groupon does not include tax and is subject to Architect's Inn's cancellation and other policies.

Reviews

TripAdvisors give Architect's Inn a perfect five-star average, and BedandBreakfast.com reviewers give it a three-star rating:

  • The building was breath taking on the inside and outside. The service was extremelly [sic] great with the friendliest host, that just made you feel like you were at your own house. – Travelgirl7471, TripAdvisor
  • The room drips with romance and makes for a perfect honeymoon, romantic getaway, or much needed vacation. – tyler3911, TripAdvisor
  • I felt like we stepped back in time to Victorian days. I can't even describe the rooms but the pictures online do not do them justice. I can go on and on about this "bed and bath". – BedandBreakfast.com reviewer who stayed on 8/2007
