A philosopher once called theater “the mask of convention over the face of society in the mirror of the unknown reflecting the rear-view of the sports car of destiny.” Simplify this theory with today’s theatrical deal: for $15, you get a ticket to the Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the Temple of Music and Art in Armory Park (up to a $34 value). Today's Groupon is good for first-come, first-served seating in Section 2 on your choice of one of the following dates:

  • Saturday, October 16, at 8:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 20, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Produced in cooperation with Penumbra Theatre Company, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom depicts the events of a 1927 Chicago recording session with legendary blues chanteuse Ma Rainey. Squabbling bandmates, a miserly producer, and sundry other obstacles push the session into tragic tumult as the titular character—played by actor and musician Jevetta Steele—attempts to record her signature sound just before the Great Depression swoops in and turns all music into sad strains of violin solos. Ultimately, the play provides audiences with a powerful peek at the experience of an African-American celebrity in an age of pervasive racism. Winner of the 1985 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, the work is part of Tony- and Pulitzer-winning playwright August Wilson's renowned Century Cycle.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is the fourth of Wilson's plays to be tackled by the Arizona Theatre Company, which has masterminded upwards of 200 stage productions in its more than 40-year history. Purchase up to two tickets to treat a friend to the magic of the theater, or use your second ticket to attend a subsequent performance, where you can astound those around you by accurately predicting every twist of the plot.

Ticket prices vary by performance date. Reservations are required at least 48 hours in advance. Contains mature themes and language.
