Early art was painted directly onto walls, leaving collectors suddenly homeless when they sold off major works. Build a more portable collection with today's Groupon: for $7, you get two tickets to any single day of Art-A-Fair in Laguna Beach (up to a $14 value), running daily through August 28. Entry is always free for Laguna Beach residents with a valid ID.
A popular summer festival destination for 45 years, Art-A-Fair stretches its myriad creative canvases across a picturesque garden, displaying works from more than 100 global and local artists and boasting a diverse lineup of musical performances. Stroll the grounds taking in the copper creations of California artist Judith Armstrong, the abstract acrylic masterpieces of Armenian painter Harut Hakobyan, and the puzzling yet evocative landscaping of avant-gardeners. All pieces on display in the juried exhibition are for sale, allowing visitors to select an objet d’art to hang on an empty wall or refrigerator, or simply stand and admire the live craftsmanship on display as creative hands paint, sculpt, and collage en plein air. Food is available at the Art-A-Fair from Tivoli Too, and for an additional fee, adults can scribble red crayon creations in a variety of art workshops. Concerts abound on weekends, from the bluegrass of Timbre Line and the swing of LB Concert Band to the '60s surf tunes of the Surftones.
A summer staple of Laguna Beach since 1967, Laguna Art-A-Fair corrals creative works from around the world, unfurling them across the apropos, color-splashed gardens of Laguna Canyon. Festival visitors meander leisurely through the web of imagination, stopping to soak up content that is as rich in quality as it is in diversity. Between brush strokes and spontaneous games of frisbee with their palette, working artists take a breather to chat about their pieces and the inspirations that drive their craft. From year to year, the festival features a wide spectrum of 2- and 3-D art, and, should one of those gems seduce the heart of a passerby, everything at the festival is available for purchase.
