About Art Uncorked San Diego
The students, many of whom have never lifted a paintbrush before, study Monet's Sunset in Venice. They look at how the brushstrokes meld the water's surface and the burnt-orange sunset, how the looming dusk hangs over both, and how the dark tower contrasts against its colorful surroundings. It's a lot to consider. But instead of getting overwhelmed, the students take a few drinks of wine and start painting, sharing their experience with classmates along the journey.
Art Uncorked San Diego's team creates social painting classes like these by bringing local artists to teach in bars and restaurants. During themed classes, painters re-create images that range from Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture to Van Gogh's The Starry Night. Students may also paint whatever their imagination conjures. Instructors supply all materials, including nontoxic, water-soluble acrylic paints, and provide support in the form of step-by-step guidance or reading aloud the quotes from inspirational posters. Most venues also offer students drink specials during class, and some allow BYOB. Depending on location, class sizes vary widely, from 20 to 70 students.
