A Chat with Arthur Murray Dance Studio
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Arthur Murray Studios have been perfecting the art of teaching dance for the past 100 years. Whether you are here to connect with a special someone, reward yourself for the hard work you do or to become the next dance superstar, our professionals will personalize a program that is right for you.
What’s one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
Jump in. Keep your lessons as tight together as possible in the beginning. You will be well cared for in every learning opportunity the studio offers. Ask your teacher for homework. Stay after your lesson and practice at the studio if you can. Keep communicating with your instructor. Have fun.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Dancing has had an immense impact on our own personal lives. The joy of social dance can correct any gloomy day. We came to Madison six years ago to continue to share our passion for life and dance. It is our deepest desire to enrich the lives of each individual that visits our family through dance.
What do you love most about your job?
Seeing a student come in from the real world and escaping for 45 minutes or more and having their whole world change completely. Witnessing them grow and succeed in their dancing, smiling at the end of a hard day. Becoming better mates, parents, individuals. Dance is so much more than steps.
Arthur Murray Dance Studios
Arthur Murray Dance Studios has been a leading name in social dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, the Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with certified instructors. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.
