About Arts and Eats Restaurant and Gallery
The People: When chef Jim Copening and artist Donna Slawsky visited the Village of the Arts in Bradenton for the first time in 2009, they were instantly inspired by its colorful commitment to culture. A few years later, they broke ground on a masterpiece of their own: Arts & Eats, a restaurant that showcases original artwork and food from all over the globe.
The Space: To make their dream a reality, Jim and Donna transformed their charming 1925 chartreuse bungalow into a restaurant and gallery. This unique space features a tin ceiling, gold walls, a sea-themed dining porch, and a sprawling backyard punctuated by a gigantic banyan tree that provides year-round shade.
The Food: Indian, French, Japanese, Thai—you name it, there's probably a from-scratch variation of it on Jim's menu. Some of the restaurant's most popular dishes include an Indian Curry with Naan Bread finished with pineapple chutney and a Moroccan-style shrimp tagine, presented in a vessel made by a local potter.
The Art: Original art hangs on the walls to go with Donna's own mosaics and jewelry. But no matter how much art fills the space, there's always room for music with the popular Jazz Mondays dinner with the Jazz Quintet, Studio Kitchen. Chef Jim plays bass and Donna sings with the group.
