Early philosophers often engaged in debates concerning the nature of humour, posing each other enigmatic questions beginning with "What's the deal with" and ending with "Am I right?" Indulge in classic rhetoric with today’s GrouponLive deal: for $20, you get two tickets to An Evening of Comedy with Elvira Kurt on Saturday, July 23, at 7 p.m. in the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre located next to the Memorial University campus (up to a $40 value). Regular seating is first-come, first-served, or call ahead to reserve seating.
Standup sensation Elvira Kurt hosts The Comedy Network’s “PopCultured with Elvira Kurt” when not judging “The Second City’s Next Comedy Legend,” appearing on CBC Radio's "The Debaters" and "Q with Jian Ghomeshi," performing on HBO, or hobnobbing with comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. Kurt lambastes Hollywood celebrities and injects topics such as beauty and aging with saucy quips and anecdotes. In addition to coining the term “fellagirly” to describe her signature blend of butch and femme, Kurt has been known to meld other oft-separated forms such polka and funeral dirges. Co-organized by St. John’s Pride Inc., this event makes a fun-filled outing for PFLAG Canada chapters and roaming bands of androids that want to learn the meaning of "laughter."
The St. John's Arts and Culture Centre opened its doors in 1967 with a controversial performance of Harold Horwood's Tomorrow Will Be Sunday, which riled the feathers of guests who held that the following day would in fact be Saturday. Denizens wishing to un-dry are welcome to enjoy the theatre bar's selection of beer and wines.
