James Monroe's Highland
Highland is the historical home of James Monroe, a Founding Father and the fifth president of the United States, who is best known for the Louisiana Purchase and the Monroe Doctrine. The early 19th-century home includes classical French furnishings, a Victorian wing, and a copy of Washington Crossing the Delaware, which features Monroe as a young Continental Army lieutenant.
This tour is a gem. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable, full of stories and details about the house and what research has shown about the actual home of James Monroe. The artifacts in the house are the most well preserved and presented of the many house museums we've visited over 30 years.
