Many athletes love ASICS (which stands for the Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," or "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body"). That the brand is beloved is not at all surprising when you look at what goes into making its athletic shoes and apparel.
It all starts at the Research Institute of Sports Science in Kobe, Japan. The more than 45,000-square-foot complex hosts an all-weather running track, basketball and volleyball courts, and several test rooms. Athletes—including such elite stars as runner Lolo Jones and volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings—gather here to test the gear in action. Everything from shock-absorption systems to Wet Grip Rubber is then analyzed with high-speed cameras and computer software more sophisticated than a place setting with four types of forks.
