A cultural festival is an easy way to learn about another people's traditions without spying on their Tupperware parties through a telescope. Save long-range lenses for astronomical peeping with today's Groupon: for $15, you get an outing for four to the Assumption Greek Festival, held August 18–21 and hosted by Assumption Greek Orthodox Church (up to a $36 value). The festival offers free admission for everyone on Friday, August 19, and kids younger than 12 get free admission every day. Each Groupon includes:
- One-day admission to the festival for four (a $2 value each; an $8 total value)
- Four National Coney hot dogs (a $3 value each; a $12 total value)
- Four orders of french fries (a $2 value each; an $8 total value)
- Four sodas (a $2 value each; an $8 total value)
The Assumption Greek Festival’s weekend of carnival attractions and Greek-themed festivities douses guests in Hellenic culture and family-friendly amusements. Professional dancers in traditional Greek costumes sashay to live music on an open dance floor, pausing to teach visitors traditional dance steps and the ancient Greek word for “macarena.” Guests can browse handmade keepsakes from Greece, Venetian glass jewelry, and original oil paintings in the marketplace, or they can feast their minds on the Assumption culture room’s exhibits on Greek history and art. Meanwhile, kids can clamber up a climbing wall, zoom down a giant slide, or catch air in the bounce house before heading to the afternoons-only petting zoo to mingle with farm animals and feral shag carpets. Detroit Tigers mascot, Paws, will also make an appearance from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20.
Quartets can quaff soda and munch their four sets of hot dogs and fries to refuel for additional spectating or flash-mob reenactments of Magnum, P.I. or they can enhance their cultural immersion by ordering additional Greek cuisine—not included in today’s Groupon—from the festival’s menu.
Though the festival offers other admission discounts, today's Groupon represents the best deal available.
