Small plates provide diners with a rare chance to act like a giant and yell "fee-fi-fo-fum!" at the waitstaff. Enjoy a make-believe growth spurt with today's Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of Portuguese cuisine at Atasca in Cambridge.
Named Best Portuguese Restaurant four times by Boston magazine, Atasca specializes in traditional Portuguese dishes in entree- and tapas-sized portions. The menu has a nifty selection of nibble-worthy "pesticos," or small plates, such as pastéis de caranguejo, crab cakes served over baby greens with balsamic vinaigrette ($9.95), or the fava rica, a warm stew of fava beans, garlic, wine, and herbs ($5.95). Kindergarteners that haven't discovered the joys of sharing tapas can feast on their own entree-sized portion of vitela madeirense, a veal chop topped with wild mushroom sauce and Madeira wine ($26.95), or frango piri-piri, a Cornish game-hen served with piri-piri chili sauce and garlic mashed potatoes ($18.95). The in-house atmosphere is warm and romantic, bedecked with Portuguese art and fresh flowers, ideal for a smooch-inducing date or a platonic rendezvous with a band of surly Casanovas.
- For the meal we had the Cataplana (seafood steamed with delicious things) and the salt cod with fried potatoes. Again, both were delicious. This place is great and we would love to go back for more. The staff was nice and the service was quick. – Ed M., Yelp
