Like tinsel, guitar solos, and incriminating legal papers, sauerkraut is best finely shredded. Enjoy this slivered specialty of the Old World with today's Groupon to the Original and Fabulous GermanFest. The festival will be held on Saturday, October 8, at the historic Athenaeum from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Choose between the following options:
- For $15, you get admission for two people (up to a $20 value) and two beers (a $10 value; a $30 total value).
- For $27, you get admission for four people (up to a $40 value) and four beers (a $20 value; up to a $60 total value).
The Original and Fabulous GermanFest celebrates Bavarian heritage with a bacchanalia of beer-laden revelry, live entertainment, and a 5K lederhosen run. Patrons can oom-pah into the Rathskeller Biergarten to bob along with fellow festival-goers to the jovial sounds of the Athenaeum German Band. Four dachshund races pit sausage-shaped pooches against one another without the aid of mustard performance enhancers. Patrons gather for a performance at the main stage by Jay Fox and the Bavarian Showtime Band or open lines of communication with mountain-dwelling relatives in a yodeling contest. Vendors populate the festival grounds with the aromas of authentic Bavarian eats, and patrons embrace fall frolicking in the Zwergen-Land children’s play area, complete with arts and crafts and a bounce tent that inspires youthful jumping like top-priority orders from Simon.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Athenaeum Foundation, which preserves and enhances a bastion of local German heritage.
Original and Fabulous GermanFest
Every fall, Original and Fabulous GermanFest brings the Athenaeum to life with German food and drinks and activities for all ages. Men and women test their strength in a Bavarian stone-lift competition and youngsters can hang out at Zwergen-Land, which features gnomes, a bounce house, and traditional German games and music. All of GermanFest proceeds support the Athenaeum Foundation, which works to preserve the namesake German-American landmark building that's glued together with hardened mustard.
