It's September 12th, 2001 and Recent Tragic Events checks in on Waverly, a young advertising executive in Minneapolis who's about to venture on an extremely ill-timed blind date. The idea of going out evolves into an evening in, as Waverly becomes increasingly concerned about her twin sister, a New Yorker who's been unaccounted for since 9/11. As the evening unfolds, Waverly and her blind date Andrew realize that they're connected by a succession of bizarre coincidences. Their date is further complicated by visits from her crazy neighbors and Waverly's great-aunt Joyce Carol Oates, who's played by a sock puppet. Filled with whimsy but rooted in tragedy, this comedy is playwright Craig Wright's (Six Feet Under, Lost) existential exploration of fate versus free will. Watch the date unfold, one bizarre turn after another, when Recent Tragic Events comes to Chicago's Athenaeum Theatre Studio Two.
