Try and pin down the sound of the Sultans of String and you’ll go on a wild goose chase down the Silk Road with detours through gypsy camps, Eastern European coffee houses and Cuban marketplaces. Fact is, the Sultans might be Canadian in origin, but their sound is global, a tapestry of Spanish flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, and French gypsy-jazz. Fiery violin dances meet rumba-flamenco guitar while a funky bass lays down unstoppable grooves. It’s very layered, incredibly danceable music – and lately, its enjoyed enormous success, as the band recently won “World Group of the Year” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and topped the best-selling album charts in their native country. Now you can experience the Sultans of String’s dizzying jams, enchanting poly-rhythms and raucous riffs as the group comes to the Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center.
