Drinking an espresso is the second most effective way to perk up in the morning, ranking just behind high-fiving the 1989 Oakland A's line-up. Start the day off right with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of espresso, coffee, and pastries at Awaken Café in Oakland. This Groupon may be used across multiple visits.
The green-minded Awaken Café, a recipient of numerous accolades from the East Bay Express, commemorates its return to the Bay Area’s bean scene with a newly minted espresso cart situated inside of their forthcoming storefront, which will open sometime this fall. Early risers can unfurl eyelids with a bevy of caffeinated concoctions, such as a 3-ounce traditional macchiato fashioned from organic Straus milk ($2.75), or a 12-ounce mug of French-pressed coffee from the local bean barons at Fourbarrel Coffee ($2). Admire the cart’s crew of friendly baristas, who emerge unscathed from ominous steam clouds armed with double lattes ($3.75 each), mochas ($4.25 each), and samurai teakettles. Awaken can adroitly prime sleepyheads for daily cheers and jeers with hot cups of tea ($3), or silence tummy rumbles that resemble shrill ring tones with French pastries from La Farine. Awaken also sells single-origin whole beans by the bag for take-home perks ($14–$21 per 12 oz. bag).
Today’s deal will also be valid for fare and drinks at Awaken’s spacious new storefront, which will sling an expanded menu of its longstanding creations alongside organic ice cream, beer and wine, and creative comestibles. Awaken's cart is open Mondays through Fridays 8 a.m.–11 a.m.; the permanent store will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m.–11 p.m when construction is complete in the fall.
