What You'll Get

Music is humanity’s universal language, narrowly beating out such close contenders as Esperanto, The Simpsons references, and yodeled profanity. Learn how to rhythmically communicate across cultures with today’s Groupon to Axis Music Academy in Birmingham, Canton, and Southfield. Choose from the following options:

  • For $179, you get a Squier Bullet Strat from Fender (a $199.99 value) and four private 30-minute guitar lessons (a $40 value each; a $359.99 total value). Customers must order the guitar over the phone and allow two weeks for delivery before beginning lessons.
  • For $15, you get two private 30-minute drum, piano, guitar, bass, or voice lessons (a $40 value each) and a commemorative T-shirt (a $20 value; $100 total value).
  • For $22, you get one recording course (a $50 value).<p>

Armed with Squier Bullet Strats from Fender, students join Axis Music Academy’s experienced axmen on an epic journey across fretboard mountain ranges during four private lessons. Calibrated for beginning songsmiths, the Squier Bullet Strat’s iconic headstock and double-cutaway body gives it a look that’s ready to rock without sacrificing playability. Each 30-minute lesson seamlessly integrates basic music theory and note reading with hands-on massage techniques that make guitars squeal with melodious delight. Bluesy minor chords and rollicking rock solos come to amplified life as fingers play hopscotch on the Strat’s easy-playing maple neck, and a tremolo bridge arm turns notes into bendy sonic pretzels in any musical style.

Customers who are already electric-guitar gurus can instead opt for lessons in acoustic guitar, bass, drums, or piano. Axis Music Academy also helps musicians preserve and polish compositions with recording classes, sharing insight on programs including Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, and GarageBand to add waves of distortion to peaked riffs or spruce up performances of The Star-Spangled Banner with loops of Dwight Eisenhower rapping.

About Axis Music Academy

When John Antone founded Axis Music Academy and started developing his proprietary teaching method, the academy was a cramped four-studio Southfield office where he gave guitar lessons. Sixteen years later, Axis has blossomed into a quartet of spacious, well-lit facilities that have one specialty in common: turn individual musicians into bands. Supplied with 12 private studios and all necessary instruments and gear, students get to set their own goals and chart their own course to learning, composing, and recording music. Whether that journey starts with them working through their favorite song on the guitar or stubbornly trying to play the tuba with their ear, the teaching staff helps them reach their goals using the full benefit of their expertise. Budding virtuosos can then combine their strengths during a slate of rock bands, glee clubs, and other group activities.

Axis Music Academy is also currently Michigan’s only Apple-authorized training center, which saves prospective producers a trip out of state if they want to get certified and tested in industry-standard recording software such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton, Final Cut, and Garage Band —all taught using a brand-new suite of computer stations and the industry-insider techniques of Charlie Grover, the former drummer of gold-certified rock band Sponge.

Lessons rarely stay confined to the classroom, since Axis lines up opportunities for students to show off what they've learned onstage at local venues, sports games, and even on air during the morning news. It also stays active in the Detroit-area community by participating in Axis Music Academy 501(C)3 and other programs.
