Babalu Restaurant & Bar
In 1946, not much existed north of St. Pete except for an unpaved, two-lane road . . . and Babalu. But the drive-up food stand must have served pretty tasty food, because a few short years later, it was able to expand into a pizzeria with an attached bar and a screened-in porch.
Today, Babalu Restaurant & Bar maintains that dedication to serving quality food with more than 100 menu items and a full bar. Inside, the air is perfumed with Caribbean shrimp and smoked ribs, while fresh baked Cuban bread from Ybor City ensures sandwiches have that perfect crunch and give. The kitchen pairs these meals with an irresistible side: fries in seven varieties, including cajun and garlic parmesan. Even the desserts are thoughtful, and they should be: they've been around for two generations.
