Musical theater magically transports its audience to an idealized time and place where endings are all happy and legs are all broken. Enjoy all the joyful resolutions and metaphorical bone trauma of the stage with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get one center-orchestra ticket to Hairspray, presented by Bakersfield Music Theatre (a $35 value). Student tickets are regularly priced at $15. Performances will be held Saturday, April 30 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m.; and Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m.
Performances take place at the Harvey Auditorium in downtown Bakersfield, and doors open half an hour before the performance.
A local institution for more than 40 years, Bakersfield Music Theatre pulls in patrons with major Broadway musicals and other songful spectacles. Based on the John Waters film of the same name, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a plucky, well-coiffed 1960s girl with peerless dance moves. Defying prejudiced naysayers, Tracy and her stouthearted entourage discover tuneful teenage romance as they chase their dreams of twist-and-shouting on live TV. The ebullient, foot-tapping score is an homage to '60s dance music as well as rhythm and blues that will provide audiences with an excellent musical repertoire for future in-car vocal recitals.
Bakersfield Music Theatre cocoons its audience in the stylish surroundings of the Harvey Auditorium, a 1,600-seat art-deco jewel that puts ears in the mood for hearing and eyes in the mood for both seeing and tasting. Most of the theater’s performances sport local Bakersfield-area talent, giving audiences the chance to hear their neighbors’ singing voices outside of the context of supermarket checkout lines.
