Oktoberfest events are known for fostering fast friendships, boisterous competition, and ill-conceived plans to add a sauerkraut room to the house. Imbibe ambitiously with today's Groupon: for $4, you get admission to a day of beer tasting and German cultural events at Bakersfield Oktoberfest, held on Saturday, October 1 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Stramler Park (up to a $15 value). Visitors must be 21 years or older.
Bakersfield Oktoberfest brings German culture stateside with a day of live polka bands, beer tasting, stein-centric competitions, and traditional German noshes, with proceeds benefitting the M.A.R.E. Riding Center. Attendees sip from a selection of eight Munich-born brews, including the pale malt Hofbrau lager and Hacker-Pschorr’s Oktoberfest-Marzen, the latter brewed with a centuries-old exclusive yeast strain. Refuel forearms with salty German eats such as a soft pretzel ($3; not included with today's Groupon) before entering the stein-carrying contest, wherein female participants emulate German barmaids by hoisting suds-weighted steins aloft for as long as biceps allow. The Safe Beer Slam pits sturdy stomachs against each other as contestants each guzzle a liter of nonalcoholic beer. Elsewhere, live polka bands, such as Anton Schnitzel and the Merry Makers, permeate the park grounds with festive beats and sausages launched from trumpet peashooters.
Proceeds from Oktoberfest fuel the efforts of M.A.R.E. Riding Center, a nonprofit equestrian oasis dedicated to providing therapeutic horseback rides to those affected by physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges.
