There is a time for obscure pieces, dusty little unknown gems – then there is a time for the Big Hits, the jaw-droppers, The Immortals. The Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has elected to open its 33rd season with three pieces firmly in the latter category. The concert starts with the Egmont Overture which features some of Beethoven’s most exhilarating music. Then Baltimore musical icon Katherine Needleman (who became the BSO’s principal oboist at the tender age of 25) will perform the Oboe Concerto by Mozart. Finally, the program finishes with Felix Mendelssohn’s glorious Symphony No. 3, the so-called Scottish, perhaps his greatest work of all. Markand Thakar conducts the BCO in The Immortals at Goucher College’s suitably sweeping Kraushaar Auditorium.
