In the protected waters of Hawk Cove, Baltimore County Sailing Center's water-savvy U.S. Sailing-certified instructors teach aspiring boatswains to helm crafts on their own. During the one-week Introduction to Sailing camp, landlubbers study sailing terms and techniques on dry land. After mastering how to distinguish port from starboard while wearing an eye patch, students put theory into practice, launching 10-foot Hunter Xcite sailboats off the beach. At the helm of their private crafts, wind wranglers learn to rig sails and harness breezes to guide rudders around calm cove waters. To keep sailors safe, instructors work with small groups and prepare them to react calmly to issues such as capsizing or the heckling of white whales. Camp culminates with a sea-spraying, sail-flapping Champ Regatta race where students can show off their newfound aquatic acumen for their family and friends.
A complimentary bus service with stops in the Towson area ferries students to and from camp. Find a complete list of bus stops at the bottom of this page.
