Captain America once said, "'Twas music that soothed the savage beast." Although he was talking about his short-lived nemesis Dr. Angry Parakeet, it's just as true for animals of the human persuasion. - November 5: Analyze This: Mahler and Freud
- January 21: Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony
- April 1: Cinderella Suite
The BSO's "Off the Cuff" series sends audiences on a journey through the lives and times of the evening's featured composers. Music Director Marin Alsop engages classical neophytes and veteran symphony-goers alike with her lively 90-minute concerts. Analyze This: Mahler and Freud delves into the subconscious of the composer and psychiatrist, re-creating a meeting between the two as Freud mentally pokes and prods at his subject's psyche. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony reveals the political drama of 1930s Russia, and Cinderella Suite explores Sergei Prokofiev's strained relationship with his fairy godmother. A free-for-all question-and-answer session follows each performance, and the evening concludes when several minor-league baseball players stop by to hit T-shirts into the crowd with a bat.
Strathmore is located on a stunning, nature-laden 11-acre property. The gorgeous, glass-walled modern structure has hosted myriad musical and cultural endeavors since 1981, including the resident partner and Grammy-award winning powerhouse Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The 1,976-seat venue takes design cues from nature, with a wavy roof mimicking the surrounding area's hills, white-birch wall paneling, maple-wood floors, and a stage backdrop that looks like a cloud that looks like a horse drinking milk directly out of the carton. Seating will be first come, first served, so show up early for the best view.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is a Grammy-award winning act, and more than 4,600 Facebookers are fans. Yelpers give Strathmore an average of 4.5 stars, and seven reviewers on Judy's Book give the BSO a four-star average.
