Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations contains a riddle that remains unsolved to this day. Elgar dedicated this work "to my friends pictured within," each of the 14 variations being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close friends, including wife Alice. The "Enigma" in the name is thought by many to be a hidden melody to a well-known tune that's woven throughout the variations. Also featured in this all-British program by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Music Center at Strathmore is Scottish solo percussionist Colin Currie's performance of James MacMillan's new concerto and Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks.
