The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Off the Cuff series takes you inside classical music's greatest works, revealing the stories, secrets, scandals and twists behind them. Elgar's Enigma Variations contains a riddle that remains unsolved to this day. Elgar dedicated this work "to my friends pictured within," each of the 14 variations being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close friends, including wife Alice. The "Enigma" in the name is thought by many to be a hidden melody to a well-known tune that's woven throughout the variations. See if you can solve the riddle at this performance of the work at Music Center at Strathmore. Marin Alsop conducts.
