Locally owned by the dining group behind Funky Monkey Wine Company, Bananas a Modern American Diner coaches its chefs to add modern flourishes to poached eggs, expertly grilled burgers, and traditional diner grub. Breakfast is served all day, with four variations on eggs benedict ($8.99), including buffalo benedict anointed with blue cheese, and southwest benedict, which arrives on a shelf of expired boarding passes. Noontime noshing commences with chicken and waffles ($12.95), whose buttermilk-battered fried chicken rides the back of a belgian waffle coated in country gravy. Burgers ($9.95) assume multiple identities by harboring Angus-beef patties, turkey burgers, chicken breast, or veggie patties, each of which arrives dressed in lettuce, tomato and onion, or a dinner jacket.

Late hunger cravings can be sated Mondays through Thursdays, when Bananas is open until Midnight, and on Fridays and Saturdays, when the diner is open 24 hours. During Sunday brunch, guests liven meals with Gospel Brunch performances, which kick off at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. On Tuesday evenings, a cast of female impersonators hosts Broadway Night, with shows at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Funky Monkey Wine Company

Funky Monkey Wine Company knows how to fill a glass, but it's the way they fill plates that has earned them a dedicated following and multiple best-of awards from OpenTable diners. Chef de Cuisine Ashley Nickell creates seasonally-inspired Italian entrees such as bruschetta del giorno and pork saltimbocca, prepared with the skills she showcased on The Food Network's Cutthroat Kitchen. Entrees pair with an extensive wine list, and a special wine dinner series presents special menus with accompanying varietals to highlight complementary flavors.
