When it's filled with summertime crowds sipping craft brews and playing cornhole, Bardo Brewpub's 15,000-square-foot beer garden makes running a beer bar look effortless. But the laid-back space—and its attached brewery—has actually been decades in the making. It was back in the '90s when cofounders Bill and Andrew Stewart started their first brewpub, Bardo Rodeo, at a rundown former Oldsmobile factory in Arlington. Though it quickly gained them a cult following within DC's then-tiny craft-brew scene, the brothers' brewing operation was shut down when their building was demolished to erect condos. Bill absconded to Australia, and that was the end. Or so it seemed.
Fast-forward about a decade, and the brothers are back with a full menu of craft brews, which have earned praise from the Washingtonian. From their award-winning White Lightnin barleywine to a sour lambic made with local yeast, Bardo Brewpub's original beers pack in intriguing flavors. Avid drinkers shouldn't worry about the weather, either. When it gets too cold for cornhole, an indoor space with exposed-brick walls and rough-hewn wooden tables creates a hospitable environment for winter drinking.
