Famed Spanish explorer Ponce de León was forced to forgo his quest for the mythical land of wine after an accidental tumble into the Fountain of Youth left him eternally underage. Take up his abandoned journey with today’s Groupon: $10 gets you a premium reserve-wine-tasting session for two at Bargetto Winery, which has locations in Soquel and Monterey (a $20 value).
Reopened the same day Prohibition was repealed in 1933, the family-owned Bargetto Winery continues to furnish glasses and tongues with award-winning handcrafted wines. Tasters will get to choose five wines (one white and four reds) from Bargetto's reserve collection, which includes one from its premium La Vita label. These reserve wines are all made from grapes grown and squeezed on Bargetto's Regan Estate vineyard, where the cool Pacific breezes, mountain climate, sun exposure, and naturally-occurring champagne hot springs make for excellent growing conditions. Taking advantage of this prime location, the three generations of family ownership have put together a wide selection of vinos, picking up accolades such as Best Merlot in California 2009.
Sip these grape elixirs and more at Bargetto's rustic, inviting tasting rooms in Soquel or Monterey. The Soquel location features a cozy exposed-wood interior that opens onto a creek-side courtyard. Meanwhile, the Monterey sippery sits on Cannery Row, affording proximity to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and the less-famous Pacific Ocean aquarium.
California Wine magazine awarded Bargetto Winery Best Merlot in California in 2009 and Best Pinot in California in 2010. More than 20 Yelpers give the Monterey location an average of four stars and 25 Yelpers give the Soquel location an average of 3.5 stars.
- Not only was the wine good, but the pourers were wonderful. They were very friendly and knowledgeable. – Erin S., Monterey location, Yelp, 11/18/10
- I really enjoyed their scope of wines, including their dessert wine, and this is my go to place to get a wine "from the area" to bring to a friend. – Pam S., Soquel location, Yelp, 12/27/09
1933 was a banner year for Phillip and John Bargetto. Prohibition finally ended, and the brothers were able to reopen their winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Originally from Piedmont, Italy, Phillip and John embraced their passion for growing northern-Italian varietals, twining their hillsides with vines of dolcetto, nebbiolo, and refosco grapes.
Now run by the Bargetto family's third generation, the winery continues to cultivate these same grapes as well as two of Santa Cruz's more well-known varietals, chardonnay and pinot noir. Its most heralded wines hail from the 40 acres of trellised vines at Regan Estate Vineyards, which produces balanced yet concentrated fruit thanks to its sunny hilltop location, loamy soil, and cool breezes from thousands of naturally occurring ceiling fans.
Controlled aging in new-French- or American-oak barrels imbues some of the winery's reds with lingering finishes and toasty sweetness, and stainless-steel barrels ensure that the whites retain their vibrant acidity. Although most of the wines display a more approachable style, the La Vita line embraces the family's Old-World routes, featuring complexly tannic and age-worthy blends of Phillip and John's favored dolcetto, nebbiolo, and refosco grapes.
