A high-energy fusion of Pilates and yoga moves sculpts lean, flexible physiques using a ballet barre in a modern twist on the Lotte Berk method. Customizable for students of different abilities, including those with no dance experience, the 55-minute classes develop toned, shapely thighs, seats, and abs using each student’s own weight as resistance and build upper-body muscles with light free weights and the occasional game of cement-bucket keep-away. Upbeat tunes keep toes tapping as heart rates climb to calorie-torching levels, and stretches punctuate each set to aid the development of long, elegant tendons.

Students should check the schedule to find upcoming classes or the perfect alibi to an ice-cream-truck heist and arrive to class wearing socks and comfortable, elastic clothes that enable a full range of motion. Socks are also available for purchase.


Carrie DeLozier wanted to create a place for women where time disappeared and they could be truly free to focus on their bodies and minds without the distractions of the outside world. That vision became barre54. Each of her studio’s spacious interiors flatters bodies with natural light shining through floor-to-ceiling windows and chandeliers hanging from exposed ceilings. Instructors with backgrounds in dance, theater, and modeling lead 54-minute sessions of isometric exercises and orthopedic stretches. The program is an extension of the Lotte Berk Method developed in the 1950s by the German dancer of the same name. Ms. Berk used the body-aligning movements of ballet to recondition her body after a car accident. Since then, various incarnations of her exercises have been practiced by thousands of students including celebrities such as Madonna, Kelly Ripa, and the all-animal cast of Fantasia.
