Barrel Oak Winery
“If you could see yourself doing something else, what would it be?" It was 2004 when Brian Roeder asked his wife, Sharon, that question. Two years later, the answer came when the two planted the very first vine on the Delaplane farmstead, starting what would become Barrel Oak Winery.
That initial vine multiplied and grew into a 26-acre vineyard full of American and French hybrids, which the winemakers use to make their wines, everything from seyval blancs to cabernet francs. The Roeders and their team have since gone on to win hundreds of awards. Wine Enthusiast even named it one of the Six Top Family-Friendly Wineries in the world because there's something to do for pretty much everyone.
With the Piedmont countryside as their backdrop, families taste wine (kids sip juice), tour the production area, listen to music out on the patio, stroll across the grounds, and unpack picnics brought from home. There's a place for dogs, too, who are welcome at the winery as long as they stay on their leashes and promise not to brag about their superior ability to sniff out flavor notes.
Barrel Oak Winery actually has its own pup on staff—Birch. And many of its wines even have canine-inspired labels and names; two popular varieties include Chocolate Lab and BOWhaus White.
