What You'll Get

Hills and mountains are formed by vast underground food deposits, which, over time, stretch the landscape into soft mounds of untapped edibility. Dig into the bounty of surrounding geography with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of Thai cuisine and drinks at Basil Restaurant in Short North. Reservations are not required, but they are recommended.

Whipping up traditional Thai cuisine with delightful twists and shocking plot twists, Basil tantalizes taste buds and soothes fiery hungers with a menu of entrees, appetizers, soups, salads, noodles, and chainsaw-cut caviar sculptures. Try the pla radprick with crispy tilapia and spicy garlic sauce ($15) and the gang mhoo tepo with spinach, pork, curry, and coconut milk ($12). Additionally, nibbling noshers and rabbit impersonators can sample smaller selections such as the seven shredded and wrapped shrimp shumai ($6) and fried chicken satay ($6.95). For dessert, mellow out with two scoops of locally made Jeni's ice cream in flavors such as black-currant yogurt or salty caramel ($3), then rev up for a wild night of mixed martial charades with a Thai iced coffee ($2).

Spicy food is a great way to separate the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and the girls from the boys if they get too rowdy at co-ed canoe camp. With today's Groupon to Basil, patrons can sample a variety of sweat-inducing spicy dishes and a fully stocked bar in a resplendent ambience of lustrous, dark wood floors and exposed brick left over from an antique shop.

This Groupon is not valid for the lunch or happy-hour specials.

Reviews

Yelpers give Basil Restaurant 3.5 stars. With an evolving new menu, Columbus Alive says the new restaurant is looking (and tasting) pretty good:

  • If you haven't guessed this yet, know that Basil is that rarity of a Thai restaurant that combines a mod, pub-crawling-friendly vibe with bold mom-and-pop-type flavored food. Yeah, this place is off to an encouraging start. – G. A. Benton, Columbus Alive
  • This is my new favorite Thai restuarant! – Ingrid M., Yelp

About Basil Restaurant

When Basil Restaurant opened in 2009, the Columbus Dispatch reported on owner Rhome Ruanphae's inspiration: his mother’s string of successful Thai restaurants that she ran with her husband while he was growing up. Rhome borrowed his mother’s culinary mastery for Basil Restaurant and has now found enough success of his own that he's opened a second location in the Brewery District.

Like the chefs at the first location, the chefs at the new location create stir-fried crispy noodle dishes and a rainbow of curries, soups, salads, and appetizers that keep ravenous diners from eating their napkins. Eventually, bar food will be added to complement the sleek new space, which blends industrial and antique-style decor.

Glittering chandeliers suspended next to exposed ductwork illuminate slate-gray walls. Above the black-and-hardwood bar rests glowing letters that spell out "LOVE," and in a separate lounge space with tufted dove-gray couches, the word "SMILE" shines above a vintage mirror.
