Encased meats are just like people: they come in infinite varieties and spend their short lives striving to break free from the protein case that binds their soul. Give the misunderstood brat the attention it deserves with today's Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of German grub and guzzle at the Bavarian Brathaus in Cary. From the authentic exterior to the regal-looking dining hall, your entire experience at Bavarian Brathaus will transport you back to the hazy Continental jaunts of your youth. Admire the German flags that serve as centerpieces for the white-clothed tables while you peruse the extensive beer menu (though alcohol is not covered by today's Groupon). On draft, you'll find potent pours, including the Spaten Oktoberfest (with a sweet, malty scent and citrusy flavor) along with authentic pilsners and lagers. The menu also includes a variety of selections by bottle. Balance the brews with a dinner menu of freshly prepared sustenance, from German potato salad ($4) to bread dumplings plain or smothered in gravy ($3.50). The epicureanly adventurous will want to try rabbit and sausage served with red cabbage, Vienna salad, and hot rolls ($22.99), or the beef rouladen ($22.99) with pickle, onion, carrot, and mustard. Traditional brats are made and prepared in-house with an original recipe of lean pork and special spices ($9.49 for the bratwurst appetizer). Bavarian Brathaus also serves a Sunday brunch from noon to 2 p.m. for a hearty alternative to your traditional eggs-and-toast shack or hash-brown funnel.

Reviews

Bavarian Brathaus was reviewed in the News & Observer and Demandy. Yelpers give it a four star average. Seventy-seven percent of Urbanspooners recommend the restaurant.

  • The restaurant's namesake specialty bratwursts are superb, especially the traditional version. Made in-house with lean pork and classic seasonings, these transport me back to my year of study in Germany far more effectively than any number of cuckoo clocks or beer steins. – Greg Cox, News & Observer
