Celebrated for their imaginative vision, the experienced dancers and contortionists at BB's Dance & Circus Arts of Tampa Bay inspire students to climb to new artistic heights with creative, aerial workouts. A two-hour trapeze class places up to 15 pupils under the tutelage of contortionism- and circus-trained instructors, who have backgrounds in turbo twirling and accident prevention. Participants amplify their upper-body and abdominal strength through a series of exercises before defying gravity and building muscle upon a trapeze. The studio's Spanish web allows aspiring acrobats to safely rehearse lofty poses before masquerading within a hoop to the effervescent beats of Cirque du Soleil soundtracks. Though perfecting the graceful movements often feels like a nimble effort, the workouts still tone, test, and pop-quiz muscles, and BB's expert aerialists warn that students may feel sore for three days following their breakup with gravity.
Origin Stories: How to Make Pretzels Fly
An accomplished student of the Pennsylvania Ballet School, classical ballerina Beth Brier stumbled upon her daughter Catie’s true passion in life after they witnessed a mystifying performance by Cirque du Soleil. Eager to encourage Catie's circus-career aspirations, Beth began a circus-arts program and drew in a clientele who also wanted to explore the sinuous realm of acrobatics. She enjoys watching her daughter—now an accomplished professional contortionist—perform and loves choreographing her own dance spectacles at Casa Tina's Mexican Restaurant every Saturday and Sunday evening.
BB's Dance & Circus Arts of Tampa Bay
At BB's Dance & Circus Arts of Tampa Bay, it all starts with ballet. This classical dance form provides students with a foundation on which they can build a well-rounded education with other athletic endeavors from trapeze and team sports to gracefully running in place at crowded crosswalks.
Dance classes rooted in ballet basics also teach students—regardless of their age and skill level—important lessons about discipline and teamwork. Meanwhile, the Circus Arts program weaves in trapeze, contortion, and aerial dance. This newer offshoot of the dance company was inspired by owner Beth Brier's daughter Catie who was bitten by the circus bug, studied with a famous Chinese contortionist coach, and then brought her expertise back to BB's.
