George Orwell famously wrote about winemaking, "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a grape's face—forever." Have fun proving him right with today’s grape-smashing Groupon: for $18, kids ages 21 and up get the 60-minute introductory home-winemaking class at Beer and Wine Hobby (a $35 value), located in Woburn. Classes are offered on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., with specific scheduled dates in October and November. New classes are being added regularly. Reference materials are provided. Be sure to call and register for your class in advance.

Beer and Wine Hobby’s 60-minute Introductory Home-Winemaking Class transforms the semi-casual wine enthusiast into a master oenologist capable of producing tongue-tantalizing vintages. Students will learn about the basic necessary equipment; how to properly use, sanitize, and store equipment; the differences in making wine with a concentrate kit and with fresh fruit; selecting proper yeast for use with fresh fruit; and, finally, bottling procedures—namely, removing the marooned sailor's message from the bottle first. Novice vintners will come away with the ability to further intimidate grapes through the ability to make and package wine. Classes are limited in size to allow for individualized attention from the instructor. Get the goods on winemaking and set off to immortalize yourself through fermentation with an introductory home-winemaking class from Beer and Wine Hobby.

Beer & Wine Hobby

The winemaking, artisan cheese, and craft-brewing connoisseurs at Beer & Wine Hobby impart culinary know-how to pupils via home beverage- and food-crafting tools and introductory courses at their warehouse store. Aspiring brewers learn via a bevy of beer-making gear, including brewing kettles, fermentation supplies, and funnels, and winemaking equipment assists do-it-yourselfers with corks, T bottles, tubing, and berry presses. For foodies, a variety of artisan cheese tools and kits, such as presses and professional molds, helps home cheese-makers craft hard or soft cheeses.

Beer & Wine Hobby's brewing classes bolster knowledge of wine and craft beer-making, providing students with thorough instruction on intricate processes as well as the lyrical chants necessary to concoct complex libations, and cheese-making classes help beginners learn how to craft home-made cheeses from their kitchens.

Great time! Not hands on, but the guy giving the class was great, and you do get to taste the (delicious) cheese at the end!
