Belly dances have persisted through the ages, unlike Jelly Belly dances, which were abolished long ago by dieting sultans. Celebrate belly dancing's rhythmic perseverance with today's Groupon: for $45, you get two tickets, two performance-soundtrack CDs, and two programs (up to a $106 value) for the Bellydance Superstars at the Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine on Saturday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Formed in 2002 by entertainment executive and former Police manager Miles Copeland, Bellydance Superstars aims to introduce wider audiences to its artful movements. Seeking to emulate such famous acts as Stomp and Riverdance, the cast members of Bellydance Superstars have taken their torsos to 20 countries and undulated in front of more than a million fellow stomach owners. The performance consists of a series of choreographed performances that showcase different styles and music, from traditional pieces to numbers inspired by tribal dance. Show goers will pick up one double sided CD containing the music of the performance, one hit single CD, as well as two tour programs providing information about the dancers and the company. Groupon holders will be seated at the venue on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Decked out in yards of swirling silky Technicolor-hued fabric and an abundance of baubles, bangles and sparkly beads, the company of American bellydancers twirl, gyrate, sway and glide to the pulsating beats of Arabic and, lately, Indian music. – Alice T. Carter, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
