With its heritage hearkening back more than 70 years ago to Italy itself, Benvenuti Italian Specialties & Catering brings Old World flavors and new recipes to its BYOB eatery and deli. Diners enter the shop beneath expansive red awnings, and a colorful collage of European dry goods, meats, and Boar's Head meats and cheeses allows eyes to feast before they scan the menu. Appetizers begin feasts with offerings such as stuffed mushrooms and grilled eggplant stacks, and salad options include the frutti di mare—a sea-caught mix of shrimp, calamari, octopus, and clams swimming atop mixed greens.

The Sunday ragu entree's meatballs mingle with sausage in a ricotta-strewn mix of rigatoni, and chefs sauté shrimp scampi in olive oil, garlic, and butter before pouring the mix over pasta. Couples and reunited turtle ninjas can also order specialty pizzas straight out of the shop's brick pizza oven surrounded by stone. Grilled chicken 'zas host roasted peppers, tomato sauce, and fresh mozzarella atop their crusty stage, and diners dive for baby shrimp, calamari, and capers in the pescatore pizza's sea of tomato sauce.

Benvenuti Italian Specialties & Catering

Benvenuti Italian Specialties & Catering first opened in Bari, Italy before packing up for Garwood, New Jersey in the early 1900's. Chefs still carry on the traditions of the Old World, though, crafting classic Italian entrees and contemporary dishes. They draw from a vast menu that includes everything from more than 20 varieties of housemade ravioli to a chicken Benvenuti, which is sautéed with peppers, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, and capers. The kitchen also transports meals from its catering menu to luncheons, banquets, and other events throughout the area.

Cured meats hang above Benvenuti's glass deli cases, which teem with olives and rounds of fresh mozzarella. Meanwhile, pastas, bottles of olive oil, and other Italian imports line the main shop floor.
