I wish there had been more discussion about the area’s history, flora, fauna, etc as described in the ad. Still, the horse was gentle and the ride was nice.

Working with Betty and her office women for directions and groupon code was amazing. They were both extremely helpful and pleasant to talk to. The scenery was beautiful out in the middle of the desert, with views of Lake Pleasant. We didn't see any animals on our ride, besides some hawks. There were wild donkey's on the rode coming in which was a nice surprise. Trails were maintained well, besides lots of horse poop which is to be expected with the amount of rides they seem to have going daily. The grounds were very junky and need some upkeep. Looks like they just leave anything that was brought onto the property to wither away. It doesn't make it looks rustic just trashy. They are strict to weight policy per rider so you get the best horse that is suited for you. Horses are well fed and have nice upkept hooves. They just go head to tail with no gumption. Slow and steady wins the race! The trail guide looked to be hurting and wasn't super pleasant, had a quick explanation of how to ride and up and out we went. I was an equestrian in my youth so I understand the basics but for someone who has no horse knowledge I would had expected a better introduction to the logistics. All in all wasn't the best, but wasn't the worse.

Perfect day & experience at Betty’s Trail Rides. The guys (Preston & Dave) we’re great service , passionate about the horses, and shows they care about their jobs. Betty & her assistant were great about sending information prior to the trip. We will be purchasing this Groupon in the future. Thank you so much Betty’s Trail Rides for your services.

Horse Tack: Geared Up for a Ride

Most basic riding lessons include a how-to on tacking up the horse. Get a head start with Groupon’s overview of horse tack.

Tack refers to everything a horse wears for a ride, from saddles to bridles to reins. Just as people dress differently for different jobs, horses wear different tack depending on whether they’re employed riding on trails, working on a cattle ranch, strutting down a runway, or competing inside a show ring.

One of the most important pieces of tack is the saddle, buckled onto a band around the horse’s middle called a girth. Western saddles, designed for long days of riding, distribute the rider’s weight evenly and comfortably across the horse’s back. At the front is a horn around which cowboys can wrap rope used to lead cattle. English saddles, on the other hand, are hornless, and are light to give horses more freedom to run and jump.

Then there are the parts of the tack designed to help the rider communicate with the horse. The bridle—leather headgear that slips around the horse’s ears and nose—is attached to a bit and reins. The bit is a metal or synthetic bar attached to the bridle that rests in the back of the horse’s mouth, on its gums. The reins connect to the bit, letting the rider tug gently to indicate the need to slow down or make a turn. Although the reins used in English and Western riding may be the same, they’re used differently. English riders hold on with both hands, whereas Western riders hold both in just one hand, leaving the other free to high-five passing sheriffs.
