Unlike stroller derbies, roller derbies are rarely bogged down by helmeted babies that weep whenever an opponent snatches away their prized pacifier-mouthguard or stuffed warthog. Watch adults invoke tears in others through the power of skate with today's Groupon: for $15, you get two general-admission adult tickets to the Big Easy Rollergirls doubleheader on Saturday, July 24, at 6 p.m. (a $28 value). The doubleheader will be held at the Human Performance Center at the University of New Orleans. Groupon purchasers must redeem their vouchers at the door on the day of the event. Although kids are welcome and their tickets (ages 6–12) can be purchased at the door, this deal is only valid for adult tickets.
Big Easy Rollergirls is an all-girl, flat-track roller derby league, showcasing wheeled warrior-women competing in the intense full-contact and self-propelled sport of roller derby. The July 24 doubleheader sees hometown heroines the Crescent Wenches battle the Chattanooga Roller Girls at 6 p.m., followed by the Big Easy All Stars taking on the Oklahoma Victory Dolls at 7 p.m. Those unfamiliar with the rough-and-tough skating competition should be able to grasp the roller derby rules after a few minutes—keep an eye on the star-helmeted player for each five-player team as she muscles her way through a pack of other players to earn points. Other entertainment at the event includes the "Pussy Footers" cheerleaders, live music between the matches, and roller skaters dressed as the late philosopher Elvis Presley.
Sample beer from sponsor NOLA Brewing Co. while awaiting the results of the charity raffle, with proceeds from the raffle going to restoration of the Gulf of Mexico in wake of the recent oil spill. Children are welcome at the event. Doors open at 5 p.m. Put on your goggles crafted from outgrown roller skates, turn off the televised sloth vs. snail races, and instead opt for high-octane roller derby action with Big Easy Rollergirls.
Reviews
While The Big Easy Rollergirls do not have any online reviews, the roller derby squad has received excellent local and national press, including a photo and video feature by W magazine and an interview with BeFitNOLA.com. The Times-Picayune also ran an announcement of the squad's 2009 fundraiser for the New Orleans Public Library's Summer Reading Program:
- Possibly the coolest and toughest group of women in New Orleans are the Big Easy Rollergirls. I know I’m in awe of them and I wish I wasn’t so beat up from the Marine Corps so I could join them. – Ann Bernard, BeFitNOLA.com
- The rollergirls have traveled to bouts across the South, raising money for various causes. Any team with players named Deb U Taunt, Fleur d'Lethal, Anti Em and ChessTosterone must have a lot of fun. – K.G. Wilkins, Times-Picayune
