About This Deal
In the past, it was taboo to smile while eating ice cream, forcing consumers to lightly pat the top of a cone to show approval. Smile your sweet teeth with today's Groupon: for $5, you get two ice-cream cones at the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck (up to a $10 value).
Featured on The Rachel Ray Show and Winner of Serious Eats' Best New Food Truck 2010, the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck dispenses delicious soft-serve ice cream and an eclectic spread of sweet-treat toppings through the streets of Union Square. Invented and served by the cone-shaped minds and friendly faces of Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff, the truck doles out creamy concoctions with character, such as the Cococone, vanilla ice cream decorated with bits of toasted, curried coconut sprinklings ($4); the Bea Arthur, which drenches vanilla ice cream in a cascade of dulce de leche and crushed nilla wafers ($4); or the salty Pimp made with vanilla ice cream coated in dulce de leche, sea salt, and chocolate drippings ($5) and meant to be a modern retelling of the classic play, The Scarlet Pimpernel. Adventurous taste buds can slather themselves with a vast array of toppings including olive oil and sea salt, wasabi pea dust, trix cereal, and more.
Though the Truck only serves dairy-based frozen treats, staffers can accommodate customers with gluten or nut allergies by taking precautionary measures and assist those with ice allergies by leaving sundaes in the sun. Monday–Friday, the truck sets up shop at the corner of Broadway and 17th Street with occasional pit stops in between and at night, so check its Twitter for current whereabouts and its website for daily scheduled locations.
