About Big Thunder Gold Mine
Big Thunder Gold Mine transports modern-day folks back to a time of prospectors, enterprising German immigrants, and gold rushes. The mine, originally named the Gold Hill Lode, was discovered by two Germans—W.B. Krupp and J.A. Engle—in 1892. Known for its diversity of rock types, structures, and dazzling minerals, the site made as good a mine in the 19th century as it makes a tourist attraction today. Today, the meticulously maintained spot gives folks a glimpse into a bygone era in American history.
