Before man conquered his fear of water, he amused himself with dust sports such as pushing boulders off cliffs, wrestling tumbleweeds, and falling in the dust. Boldly go where our aquaphobic forebears dared not with today's Groupon: for $55, you get a group surf lesson (an $80 value) and outrigger-canoe ride (a $30 value) from Big Wave Dave Surf Co. (a $110 total value).
Big Wave Dave Surf Co. safely guides Waikiki Beach visitors through Hawaiian culture with outrigger-canoe rides and surf lessons tailored to all skill levels. During a group surfing lesson, expert instructors outfit students with the equipment necessary to skirt across the watery playground, including a surfboard, leash, understanding of how to read waves, and supply of mermaid repellant. Beginner lessons commence with a beach-bound discussion, 10–15 minutes, of water safety and wave conditions before students paddle out alongside the instructor to catch waves. Intermediate and advanced students can glide out to the break where one of Big Wave Dave's surf sages dishes out advice on technique, new maneuvers, and falling without getting wet.
During the outrigger-canoe ride, aqua explorers paddle along in a boat similar to the type used by ancient Hawaiians for fishing and commuting between islands. The captain and co-captain guide the boat for a relaxing ride, lasting 20–30 minutes, pointing out reef wildlife and identifying the astrological sign of each passing sea turtle and dolphin.
Lessons and rides are subject to availability, so call ahead to make a reservation.
Big Wave Dave Surf Co.
Big Wave Dave Surf Co.'s staff of experienced wave riders hits the shores of Waikiki Beach for private and small-group lessons in surfing, standup paddleboarding, and outrigger canoeing. Each instructor's résumé boasts at least 10 years of teaching experience, an extensive knowledge of first aid, and at least one semester as Poseidon's college intern. During classes, first-time surfers learn the basics on land before heading into the warm waters to hang their first 10, whereas advanced riders barrel out into the waves atop fiberglass and epoxy boards. Outrigger canoes recall ancient Hawaiians' exploration of Oahu's colorful reefs, and standup paddleboards combine an intense workout with clear views of the pristine waters below. The shop also offers daily and long-term rentals of equipment, with complimentary delivery and pickup from local hotels.
