Groups of up to seven surfers tote their rental boards and leashes to the sands of Waikiki Beach for a 60- to 90-minute lesson under the tutelage of an experienced instructor. Beginners spend the first 20 minutes on land reviewing ocean safety, proper positioning, and octopi's elaborate traffic signals before heading into the water for the remainder of the session. Advanced students begin each session on land, too, after which they can sharpen their wave judgment and learn new techniques while the instructor offers helpful advice.
Additionally, crews of up to nine board a long outrigger canoe with a captain and co-captain, who assign each passenger an appropriate paddling duty. Over the course of 20–30 minutes, ships head out over the reefs between Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, where guests catch glimpses of fish, turtles, and dolphins before riding the waves back to shore.
Big Wave Dave Surf Co.
Big Wave Dave Surf Co.'s staff of experienced wave riders hits the shores of Waikiki Beach for private and small-group lessons in surfing, standup paddleboarding, and outrigger canoeing. Each instructor's résumé boasts at least 10 years of teaching experience, an extensive knowledge of first aid, and at least one semester as Poseidon's college intern. During classes, first-time surfers learn the basics on land before heading into the warm waters to hang their first 10, whereas advanced riders barrel out into the waves atop fiberglass and epoxy boards. Outrigger canoes recall ancient Hawaiians' exploration of Oahu's colorful reefs, and standup paddleboards combine an intense workout with clear views of the pristine waters below. The shop also offers daily and long-term rentals of equipment, with complimentary delivery and pickup from local hotels.
