Two wheels are better than none with today's Groupon: for $35, you get a South Beach Art Deco or a Miami River guided Segway tour from the proven guides at Bike and Roll Miami. If you have never been on a Segway, prepare for a gentle learning curve, intuitively responsive control scheme, and a peek into a future ruled by cyborgs.
The Art Deco District is best known for its elegant, early 20th-century architecture and not its underground guitar-accessory economy. The beauty of the area has been largely preserved thanks to a coveted spot on the National Register of Historic Places, which recognizes historical landmarks worthy of preservation. Navigating this district is less like sightseeing and more like sightbeholding. In addition to the pristine facades, you'll encounter cultural museums, trendy shops that will most likely prefer you to ride your Segway directly inside, and beaches, as you wind your way through town, checking off different interesting buildings, birds, and cloud formations in your Moleskine.
The Miami River tour takes you down the meandering Miami Riverwalk, which slices through ancient landmarks and modern marvels. Wheel up to the prehistoric Miami Circle, or visit sites such as Fort Dallas Park and Flagler Palm Cottage. You'll jump from point to point along the rich historic timeline of Miami, just like Quantum Leap's Dr. Sam Beckett, but without all the annoying time-tweaking. And there's no better way to soak it all in than atop your gyroscopic chariot.
Similar to a journey on the S.S. Minnow, both tours will last approximately three hours. You can choose either a 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. departure time for the Art Deco tour, or 10:30 a.m. for the Riverwalk tour. Also included is a 15–20-minute training session where you will quickly learn to become one with your Segway.
Before partaking in this activity, know that riders must be 12 years or older and weigh at least 100 pounds or the Segway will buck them into the stratosphere on a spring-loaded platform.
The 2001 unveiling of the Segway was preceded by a great deal of speculation, often referring to the machine by the codename “IT.” What other products built anticipation with a cool codename?
- Return of the Jedi, Codename: Blue Harvest
- iPhone 3GS, Codename: e-Phone ‘98
- Da Vinci Code presequel, Codename: MP3 of cash register noise played on repeat
- 1996 U.S. Presidential Election, Codename: Twister vs. Independence Day
- Water, Codename: Crystal Pepsi
