What You'll Get
As spring spreads like spilled gravy over the land, hibernating bicycles slowly awaken and emerge from the undergrowth, shy and stiff with sleep. Help your own bicycle bosom-buddy rise and shine with today's Groupon: for $39, you get one month of unlimited spin classes, secure bike parking, and full access to the facilities at Bike Dojo, located in downtown Santa Cruz.
Owner Rob Mylls, an avid cyclist and former BMX champion, has built Bike Dojo into a well-oiled biking community and supportive cycling gym for anyone from Tour de France flyers to tricycle trainees. For one month, you can push an unlimited amount of pedals in any cycling class, including indoor spin classes offered daily and guided outdoor rides several times a week. Otherwise, strap into one of the virtual-reality bikes and choose a sensory-inciting destination, which allows you to feel the fictionalized zephyr of a mountainside trek, waft the salty air of a beachside cruise, or taste the moisture that's wicking off the super sweaty guy next to you.
Each class and ride is led by a cultivated cyclist who educates two-wheeler students about bike fundamentals, group riding techniques, and simple bike maintenance. Use of the members' secure bike-parking facility (a $30 value) is included to ensure cycles are not stripped of trekking tires and left naked in speed-racing dreams.
- There will always be those who prefer toiling, hamsterlike, on a stationary machine in the dank warrens of a gym. But there are also those who would rather tone the ticker while watching the waves of Monterey Bay splash against West Cliff Drive. For them, cycling is the way to go, and the Bike Dojo is a great means to get there. – Curtis Cartier, SantaCruz.com
