After years of unsuccessful attempts at inventing a two-wheeled form of propulsion, Wilbur and Orville Bike finally realized the problem was that their prototypes were all screwed down to the gymnasium floor. Pedal through some less sterile sites with today's Groupon: for $25, you get an hour-long bike tour of Newport from Bikes & Kites (a $50 value). Tours launch from Bikes & Kites' storefront on Purgatory Road, next to Easton’s Beach in Newport, and are open to anyone 18 years of age or older. In addition to your two-wheeled main tool, Bikes & Kites will provide you with noggin protection, an area map, and refreshment.
Under the guidance of experienced cyclists with spellbinding quadriceps, you'll gleefully glide atop a 21-speed hybrid all-terrain bicycle as you soak in stellar views of the City by the Sea. Tour itineraries are flexible enough to accommodate the abilities and desires of each group of riders, but tours often pass through the scenic Sachuest Point National Wildlife Preserve, Norman’s Bird Sanctuary, downtown Newport, and Bellevue Avenue's row of historic mansions without the crippling financial risk of landing on Park Place. The pace of pedaling is determined by each group, with complete roundabouts ranging between one and two hours in length and traversing anywhere from 5 to 20 miles of land. At the time of your tour, you may choose to upgrade to a two-hour journey for an additional $15 charge.
A bike tour from Bikes & Kites is not only an apt way for out-of-town mermaids to loosen up their newly human leg joints, it's also a fabulous way for Newport natives to re-bond with their city's streets after a pair of insensible shoes caused their ugly falling out at Janet's wedding. Tours require a minimum of three riders with a maximum of ten, so herd your homeys for a breezy bustle through town, or prove the old saying that a family that bicycles together should never fight a land war in Asia.
