Q&A with the Owner
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
This yoga practice was designed to be therapeutic, not to be a fitness routine. Fitness is a side effect. People feel better when they practice regularly. Flexibility and strength is gained, stress is reduced, old injuries are treated, sleep-patterns improve, and people are able to do everything else in their lives better. They feel this, and that is what keeps people coming back. We try to support people however we can in their practice.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
At my age, I prefer "move it or lose it". This yoga is all about learning to connect to your body with conscious effort and breath. You will find that edge of pain and learn not to abuse it. In the process, you will strengthen and heal your body.
When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?
My wife Mary has been doing this yoga since 1997 and began teaching it in 2007. I began practicing in 2002. I don't have what normally is thought of as a passion for fitness. I practice and believe in this yoga because I suffered for decades with back injuries. This works. I see it work for lots of other people with various conditions and injuries.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
This yoga should always be practiced with form over depth. This is a disciplined practice, very precise. Poses are performed in certain ways for a reason. Students are encouraged to back out of a posture to their own level, rather than modifying the posture, to obtain depth. This is what makes this yoga accessible to beginners and people with injuries like me.
