Yoga is unique in that it is the only medieval physical-fitness art that does not involve firing crossbows at a grendel. Bend and stretch bloodlessly with today's Groupon: for $49, you get one month of unlimited sweat-inducing classes at Bikram Yoga East Harlem (a $170 value). The modest yogabode is located on 116th street right off of 5th Avenue.
Students of all skill levels and lifestyles can glisten their way through 26 challenging postures and two pranayama breathing techniques during classes at Bikram Yoga East Harlem, which take place in a heated room to promote deep-muscle warming and detoxification. The added atmospheric degrees not only help students stretch and move with ease, but reduce the risk of exercise-related strain, injury, and shiverlimbs. During each class, friendly and experienced instructors guide students through the systematic series of poses, each designed to move fresh, oxygenated blood to every inch of the body, promoting balanced systems, healthy weight, muscle tone, and mental clarity. Classes are 90 minutes long, and are held at many times each day.
Grab a yoga mat, water bottle, and bendable spine before attending a session. Each class will include access to one studio-provided towel, but additional absorbers must be rented for $0.50 each. If you don’t have your own yoga mat or forget a water bottle, both can be rented or purchased from Bikram Yoga East Harlem ($2 to rent a mat, $2 for Smartwater). After each 90-minute session of stretching and sweating, you'll leave the studio feeling clean and energized enough to hop into a shower to get cleaner and more energized enough to jump out of a low-flying crop duster.
New students only.
- I was pleasantly surprised upon walking into BYEH to find that the atmosphere inside feels more like a holistic spa than the hot, pungent Bikram studios I am used to. The warmly lit reception area is both inviting and immaculate. – Nicaila Matthews, Examiner
- The owners are friendly, and everything is clean and welcoming. – A.B., Yelp
Bikram Yoga East Harlem
Native East Harlem resident Stephanie Pope fosters a friendly community of holistic health and wellness with daily Bikram yoga classes held in her roomy two-story studio. An eco-friendly heating system made from recycled aluminum warms the spacious main studio up to detoxifying temperatures, and the lower-wattage system uses a small amount of energy culled from baby lightning bugs. The studio's instructors guide students of all abilities through the 26-posture practice. Students can hit the showers before perusing the art featured in the sitting area's gallery. Bikram Yoga East Harlem also houses an onsite massage therapist by appointment, allowing pupils to supplement their sessions with kneading that mitigates the body and unties any pretzels that have spontaneously sprouted from the back.
