The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute was designed as a living institution, ensuring that Birmingham's contribution to the civil rights movement translates to present generations. At BCRI, guests learn about the courageous men and women who dared confront centuries of bigotry to transform the American landscape. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute opened to the public in November of 1992. Ever since, the BCRI has done everything in its power to do justice to the heroes portrayed within the Institute's halls.

Along with being one of very few Smithsonian Institute Affiliates in Alabama, BCRI became accredited by the American Association of Museums in 2005, an honor that few museums are able to claim. By showing one of the most turbulent chapters in American history, the BCRI inspires guests by telling the moving stories of courageous everyday Americans who dared stand up to injustice and showing how their struggles shaped the present and the future. In keeping with this, today commemorates the anniversary of six young people who lost their lives to this movement on September 15, 1963—a story that the museum preserves.

  • The Institute serves as a national center for education and professional development on the American Civil Rights Movement and is one of the country’s top heritage-tourism sites. BCRI’s mission is to promote civil and human rights worldwide through education. – Smithsonian
  • What more can you ask of such an institution - nothing.

To gain an understanding of the issues, the context and the characters you must go and visit. I challenge anyone to come away and honestly say they did not learn anything and were not moved. – ianmLondon, TripAdvisor
