First heard about Black Horse because they have a farmstand on the Thruway, but this was the first we actually went to the Farm. LOTS of variety and good prices. They carry gift items as well as produce and other foods. The gift items are NOT included in the Groupon, which I think they intend to clarify for next year. Still, there is so much there that it's not hard to spend the groupon, especially if you are into making jams or preserving for the winter....

The strawberry-rhubarb jam was great. The pie was not so good. It was mostly gelatin with very little strawberry or rhubarb in it. Most of the vegetables are fresh but I tried the green beans a few times and they have not been fresh picked.

What You'll Get

Fresh produce provides its eaters with many benefits, such as vitamins, minerals, and the ability to fill pie crusts in the absence of can openers and tigers with metal braces. Prepare for fangless baking days with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of farm-fresh produce and groceries at Black Horse Farms in Athens.

Situated two hours north of the Big Apple in a historic red barn built in 1864, the 800-acre Black Horse Farms grows florid fruits and vegetables to sate patrons' stomachs while supporting environmental stability. The sun-ripened earth treats—such as beefsteak tomatoes and sugar sweet corn—are only sold during the seasons in which they are most wholesome and undergo a rigorous quality inspection that includes washing, grading, and skin exfoliating before going to market. Black Horse Farms' gardening center yields equally vitalizing vines, including sweetly scented house plants, annuals, perennials, and remarkably sprightly bicentennials ($1.99+).

An on-site bakery aims to please saccharine-deprived sweet teeth; pick up a pie, such as coconut custard or old-fashioned apple, to add tart thrills to parties and book-club get-togethers ($14.95), or grab a mixed cookie platter to invigorate a game of oversized checkers ($19.95). Black Horse Farms’ gourmet department offers a wealth of organic pantry products, such as homemade jams and a half-pound of vintage extra-sharp cheddar capable of cutting itself ($9.99).
