About Black Oak Wilderness School
Dane Nelson, chief instructor of Black Oak, founded this wilderness school to help adults and youth connect with the natural world around them. He does so by teaching adults and youth traditional survival skills, from water purification and fire building to leather working and bow making. During the blacksmithing class, for instance, he and his team of instructors teach basic forging techniques such as scrolling and drawing a point while students create own metal piece to take home.
